Carmel Wins Third Straight Rose-Hulman High School Math Title

Familiar names once again showcased their problem-solving skills
to capture top individual, grade and school honors in this year's
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology High School Mathematics
Competition, conducted on November 12.
Now in its 46th year, Rose-Hulman's competition is a 20-problem,
one-hour exam that has become one of the Midwest's largest academic
contests. Past individual award winners have featured
students recognized as Indiana's "Mr./Miss Math" and "Mr./Miss
Science," members of the USA Today All-USA High School Academic
Team and members of the U.S. team in the International Mathematics
Olympiad.
Students had one hour to complete 20 questions covering a wide
range of mathematics categories. The contest is unique
because it tests the skills of students in all four grade
levels. Individual and team honors were presented to
freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Carmel High School won the overall school title for the third
consecutive year. The school outscored rivals Terre Haute
South, Castle from Newburgh, Ind., and Evansville's Signature
School for the top spot in a competition attracting 23 schools and
approximately 440 students from Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.
Five students had perfect 100-point scores this year: Lyndon Ji
of Carmel and Shi-Ke Xue of Iowa City West, in the senior division;
and Yushi Homma, David Liang and Eric Langowski of Carmel and Mark
Sellke of Lafayette Harrison, in the sophomore division. Ji
was a class division champion with a perfect score for the fourth
consecutive year.
Here is a breakdown of this year's class division
competitions:
Seniors -- Carmel was the class team champion, with members
Terry Ming (fourth), Youkow Homma (fifth), Willie Zhu (fifth) and
Ji. Iowa City West was second, led by Xue and Patrick Tierney
(sixth). Terre Haute South was third with Nick Posey (third)
and Michael Mardini (sixth). Rebecca Chen of Park Tudor and
Marissa Stephens of Indianapolis North Central tied for second
place.
Juniors -- Iowa City West was tops in this grade division with
top finishes by Chaein Jung (second), Ji-Eun Choy (sixth), Jiahang
Zou (eighth) and Asya Bergal (12th). Fishers was second, led
by Nate Smith of Fishes (fourth), while Park Tudor was third, led
by Dan Fu of Park Tudor (third). Likith Govindaiah of
Champaign Central was the individual champion. Other top
students were, Nicholas Wawrykow of South Bend St. Joseph's
(fourth), Andy Mayo of Indianapolis Lutheran (fourth) and Neil
Jairath of Castle (fourth).
Sophomores -- Carmel was the division team champion with members
Patrick Tan (second), Charles Liang (fifth), Homma and David
Liang. Fishers was second, led by Josh Woodward (sixth) and
Sheila Han (seventh). The Culver Academies was third with
Jing Wen Liao (third) and Yin Xiao Wang (sixth). Langowski
was an alternate participate for the Carmel team. Ryan Chung
of Terre Haute South was fourth. Homma, Langowski, David
Liang, Liao and Sellke received book prizes for being the top
sophomore male and female students -- honors given in memory of
Mary Rhein, a teacher who coordinated the contest in West Chester,
Ohio, for several years.
Freshmen -- Carmel was the division team champion with members
Alex Yu (second), Kevin Fei (fourth), Joshua Segaran (fifth) and
Chrishan Fernando (ninth). Park Tudor was second, led by
first-place winner Nathan Mytelka and Julia Wang (seventh).
The Culver Academies was third, with George Ye (sixth) and Junyi
Dai (10th). Mytelka and Wang received book prizes for having
the top freshman male and female students -- recognition provided
in memory of Sally Shonk, a former Vigo County (Terre Haute, Ind.)
teacher.
Other schools competing were Castle, Champaign Central
(Illinois), Covenant Christian, Lutheran, North Central
(Indianapolis), Park Tudor (Indianapolis), South Bend St. Joseph's,
South Vermillion, Terre Haute North, Urbana (Illinois), Warsaw,
West Lafayette and West Vigo. Students from Vigo County's
Honey Creek Middle School also participated but were ineligible for
team or individual honors.
Rose-Hulman's mathematics competition is organized by professor
John Rickert with assistance from department secretary Michelle
Prather and department chair Allen Broughton. Faculty members
assisting were Leanne Holder, Ralph Grimaldi, Diane Evans, Vincenzo
Isaia, Joseph Eichholz, Mark Inlow and Zhixu Su. Providing
helping hands were members of the Pi Mu Epsilon mathematics honor
society, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, Math Club and other
student volunteers.
