Rose-Hulman Student Profile Becoming More Global and Diverse; College Becomes More Selective in Admissions
August 25, 2011
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology continues to reap benefits
from its growing national and international reputations with the
most geographically diverse freshman and transfer class that
arrived on campus this weekend to begin new student orientation for
the 2011-12 academic year.

Coral Gables, Fla., and Angelica Cox of Indianapolis, Ind., decide
where to place their belongings into a residence hall room in
Baur-Sames-Bogart Hall during Move In Day for the 2011-12 incoming
class. President Matt Branam will welcome students and
parents on Saturday to start orientation activities.

Rose-Hulman President Matt Branam welcomed students and their
parents on Saturday, August 27 before the incoming
class was introduced to the college and its traditions.
Students then participated in an interactive "Survival of the
Engineer" game show, learned about the ethical and social
expectations of college, and registered for fall quarter
classes. The fall term begins on Thursday, September 1.
Overall, the 538 new students expected are the second largest in
Rose-Hulman history, second only to last year's total of 563.
And, several others wanted to join the group but were placed on an
admission waiting list for the first time, according to Jim
Goecker, vice president of enrollment management.
"We are becoming a more selective institution with this
year's admission rate the lowest in school history," said
Goecker. "Interest in attending Rose-Hulman continues to grow
as we received record applications from every state and 44
countries . . . The 2011 freshman class is filled with dynamic
students that are ready to make a difference during their
Rose-Hulman careers."
Goecker noted that Rose-Hulman set records for total
applications (4,298) and applications from females (1,048),
international students (329) and Latino/Hispanic students
(220). From that group, record numbers of women,
international students and Latino/Hispanic students are featured in
the 2011-12 freshman class.
"We are especially pleased to have a record number of women in
this year's new student totals," said Goecker. "Engineering has
been seen as a male profession for too long and having back-to-back
record years in female enrollment indicates Rose-Hulman's
commitment to diversifying the engineering profession."
A large percentage of the international freshman student group
is coming from China (27 students). Other countries on the
list are India, Mongolia, Nepal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea
and Turkey.
Academically, 36 members of the freshmen class earned perfect
math scores on the SAT or ACT scholastic assessment tests.
The students had a median 680 SAT math scores and 610 SAT critical
reading scores, or median 32 ACT math scores and 30 ACT English
scores. The median student ranked in the top six percent of
their high school graduating classes.
Thirty-four members of the incoming class will participate in a
unique first year living-learning community focused on
sustainability. The Home for Environmentally Responsible
Engineering (HERE) members will live with in the same residence
hall, learn about sustainability and sustainable engineering in a
shared curriculum, develop a professional identity and skills for a
changing world, and prepare for advanced sustainable engineering
coursework and projects. HERE members will help shape the
future, according to program director Patsy Brackin, professor of
mechanical engineering.
