Civil Engineering Professor Jim McKinney Inducted into Indiana Asphalt Pavement Association’s Hall of Fame

Jim McKinney, Roland Hutchins Distinguished Professor of Civil
Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, has been
inducted into the Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana (APAI)
Hall of Fame as a hallmark contributor to Indiana's transportation
industry.

Veteran Educator: Jim McKinney has taught a wide range of
courses to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology civil engineering
students since joining the faculty in 1980. He served as
department chair on two occasions, has coordinated the
administration of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and was a
professional mentor to the Cecil T. Lobo student chapter of the
American Society of Civil Engineers.

During a 36-year career as a college instructor, McKinney has
helped educate thousands of civil engineering and asphalt pavement
professionals. He has been a member of the Rose-Hulman
faculty since 1980, and was chair of the Department of Civil
Engineering from 1982-2001 and again in 2007. He also served
as a graduate instructor from 1976-1980 at Purdue University, where
McKinney earned bachelor, master and doctoral degrees.
McKinney has coordinated the Hot Mix Asphalt Quality Assurance
Certification Program in conjunction with APAI and the Indiana
Department of Transportation (INDOT) since 1986, and has been chief
proctor of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam at Rose-Hulman for
27 years. He also mentored the APAI civil engineering
scholarship program at Rose-Hulman.
"The certification and scholarship programs, under Jim's
leadership at Rose-Hulman, have launched literally hundreds of
successful careers in our industry," said William I. Knopf, APAI's
executive director. "Jim's commitment to the asphalt industry
has never waivered. He is a passionate advocate for quality
asphalt pavements, and above all, he has been a trusted industry
friend to many of our customers, member firms and industry
partners."
APAI Hall of Famer Don W. Lucas, former INDOT chief engineer and
1959 Rose-Hulman alumnus, introduced McKinney's induction at the
organization's Hall of Fame Ceremony and Scholarship Banquet in
Indianapolis. McKinney becomes the 10th inductee to the APAI
Hall of Fame, joining Bill Rieth and Robert McCormick of the
Rieth-Riley Construction Company, Fred Fehsenfeld of The Heritage
Group, Bill Kelly of Walsh-Kelly Inc., J.J. Mick McTague and Dennis
Drysdale of Fauber Construction, John Spangler of Milestone
Contractors, Lloyd Bandy of APAI and Lucas.

McKinney's career achievements include being named the American
Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Indiana Section Outstanding Civil
Engineer (2003), American Council of Engineering Companies' Public
Service Award (2002), APAI Award of Merit (2001) and Sagamore of
the Wabash (1989). He also served as president of the ASCE
Indiana Section (1987-1988).
Beginning his career as a field engineer at Chicago Bridge &
Iron in 1969, McKinney was a research engineer for INDOT in
1975. He also served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot,
instructor and flight examiner from 1969-1974.
McKinney is planning to retire at the end of the 2011-12
academic year. He has been married to his wife, Melody, for
41 years. They have two children and three grandchildren.
APAI is a 50-year-old not-for-profit trade organization
representing the interests of the asphalt paving industry in
Indiana. It is dedicated to promoting the use of asphalt by
developing and delivering customer-driven programs to enhance
quality and excellence in all aspects of asphalt technology.
