Not just a cornfield

We understand that if you've never been to Indiana, you might not have the complete picture of the diversity of the Hoosier State. You might be surprised to know that while in our fair state you'll find quaint towns, big cities, world class sporting events, beautiful lakes and hiking trails.

Terre Haute: That's French for uh… something
Terre Haute is located in southwestern Indiana. It is a city of 60,000 residents who are friendly and full of Midwestern values and Hoosier hospitality. Our city has its own television stations, symphony, parks, big name concerts - and even running water. All jokes aside, it's a great place to go to school. There are also three other colleges here in town: Indiana State University, with about 10,000 students, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, a smaller women's college, and Ivy Tech Community College.

What's there to do in Terre Haute? Plenty!

You can take a trip down our segment of U.S. 40 - the Historic National Road, America's first, federally funded interstate highway. Stop downtown to visit our art museum or brand new children's museum. Enjoy our historic nearby parks such as Deming Park or Hawthorn Park. Walk, run or ride your bike on the National Road Heritage Trail - you can hop on it just behind our IM fields and walk about five miles east to downtown Terre Haute. Shop at Honey Creek Mall or any of our collections of specialty shops. Terre Haute has two big movie theaters, lazer tag, mini-golf, bowling, Community Theatre of Terre Haute, Terre Haute Symphony, and great festivals and entertainment. You can find an events calendar, restaurants, activities, shopping and more from the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau. Need to chill with friends or have a different place to study? Java Haute and Starbucks are nearby coffee shops that love Rose-Hulman students! Doesn't seem like such a bad place to live, does it?

Oh...that French name? It means "High Land." Those early French fur traders gave us that name because we're situated here above the Wabash River.

Road trip!
Looking for some big city action? Indianapolis is just an hour away by car and once there you'll find a major metropolitan city with professional sports (ever heard of Peyton Manning?), major cultural programs, great shopping, dining and lots of fun places to hang out.

We're also within two hours of Big Ten schools like Purdue University, Indiana University and the University of Illinois. And Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis are each within a three-hour drive. We hear those places are even bigger than Terre Haute in case you're in the mood for exploring.
