Expand your learning internationally.

Study Abroad StudentsIn recent years Rose-Hulman students have found themselves in Australia, Chile, Denmark, Eastern Europe, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Spain and Sweden. We typically see 20-50 students each year spend some of their time abroad. In the summer of 2009 we had students in England and France and seven students studying at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Japan. They aren't there on vacation. They are working in the field on projects or tapping into another university's specialized programs. They are studying abroad as part of our learning trip programs or enrolled in another university for a semester or two.

Why leave the beautiful campus of Rose-Hulman to study?
It offers a chance to experience another culture. You work with students from other schools to solve problems together. You gain a greater understanding of where your field of study fits in the big picture. And you can pull all these experiences together to improve your education.

Before you start packing there is some planning involved.

1. Important Questions to Ask:

  • Where do I want to go?  Do I want to learn another language or go to an English-speaking country?
  • How long do I want to study abroad?
  • What do I want to study? Technical/Scientific courses or humanities?
  • Can I get credit?  Do I need credit?
  • Will I graduate on time?
  • Can I afford it?

2. Think and Do Research

  • Speak to professors
  • Speak to students who have studied abroad
  • Surf the web - www.studyabroad.com or www.goabroad.com
  • Check out other colleges' websites - look for international education
  • Find a program at Rose, another US college, or at a foreign institution.

3. Talk to Mom and Dad!

4. Talk to Your Advisor or Department Chair

  • What time is best to go abroad?
  • What courses do I need to take to graduate and when do I need to take them?
  • Fill out a "transfer of credit" form.

5. Talk to Financial Aid
